Different Types of Chalk Bags: Which One Is Right for You?
The right gear, including shoes, harnesses, and chalk, plays a crucial role in helping climbers conquer their projects and push their limits. Chalk bags, often overlooked, are another essential piece of gear that can significantly impact your climbing experience.
Will the right chalk bag help you climb harder? Will you be prepared for your adventure or forget critical gear like nail clippers or tape?
There are only two different types of chalk bags, but there are many variations, so how do you know which one is right for you?
However, there are many different features that one can choose from. Your choice of chalk bag/bucket will depend on your preferences.
Do you want a chalk bag/bucket with a brush holder, a zipper pocket, a Velcro closure system, etc.? These features serve specific purposes. For instance, a brush holder is useful for cleaning holds, a zipper pocket can hold small items like nail clippers or snacks, and a closure system like Velcro or drawstrings helps prevent chalk spillage.
Chalk Bag VS Chalk Bucket
Choosing between a chalk bag and a chalk bucket may seem daunting, but in reality, it's a straightforward decision that depends on your preferred climbing style.
What type of climbing do you enjoy? Do you rope climb, boulder, or both? Your answer to this question will determine the kind of chalk bag you should get.
Chalk Bag
If you do any climbing with a rope, where you’ll want to take your chalk on the wall with you, then grab a chalk bag! A chalk bag can be used on or off the wall, so it’s the perfect choice if you want something for rope climbing and bouldering.
They’re designed to be lightweight and small, allowing a single hand to enter at a time. While resting on a route, you reach for your free hand behind your back and dip it in the chalk. Then, you swap hands and viola, and you’re chalked up to keep climbing!
Chalk Bucket
Chalk buckets are designed to live on the ground and are used explicitly for bouldering. They’re larger and have a broader base that helps them not fall over. Unlike a chalk bag, which may spill when set down, a chalk bucket is made to stay upright.
The bigger design lets climbers put both hands in the bucket and minimize the chalk dust they throw into the air. With many boulder problems being only a handful of moves, there usually isn’t the need to chalk up while on the wall. Unless you’re a super sweaty boulderer, a chalk bucket will suit you just fine!
Different Chalk Bag/Bucket Features
Once you’ve decided on the type of chalk bag you want (a roped or bouldering bag), you can start thinking about the features you want included. So, what options do you have?
Brush holder – A brush holder is the perfect choice for clean a project. Once you reach the top of the route, seamlessly pull out your brush and get to work. You can shout for a take while you’re being lowered to scrub any of the holds.
Zipper pocket – Having a pocket sewn into your chalk bag can be a skin/fingernail/energy saver. Keep finger tape, nail clippers, hand balm, or small snacks for your next climbing session. Remember that a chalk bag is much smaller than a bucket, so you’ll be limited to what you can carry in its pocket.
Closure system—This feature strictly applies to chalk buckets. Some have drawstrings that cinch tight, while others include a roll-up and buckle to prevent chalk from spilling when you toss it around. Roll-up and buckle options last longer because drawstrings lose elasticity over time.
Rim—The rim of a chalk bag has two options: stiff or soft, each with its pros and cons.
